Connections, Renewal, and Inspiration.

In her Presidential Address at the AOTA INSPIRE 2023 Annual Conference & Expo in Kansas City, Missouri, American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) President Alyson Stover shared her experiences traveling in 2022 to different state conferences and occupational therapy events. She described how the incredible people she met on her cross-country journey helped her to find "connections, renewal, and inspiration" and reinspired her passion for expanding her understanding of occupational therapy. During her address, Alyson Stover invited people who are a part of her cross-country occupational therapy community to share their own experiences with the conference audience.

The New England Neurosurgical Society: growth and evolution over 70 years.

The New England Neurosurgical Society (NENS) was founded in 1951 under the leadership of its first President (Dr. William Beecher Scoville) and Secretary-Treasurer (Dr. Henry Thomas Ballantine). The purpose of creating the NENS was to unite local neurosurgeons in the New England area; it was one of the first regional neurosurgical societies in America. Although regional neurosurgical societies are important supplements to national organizations, they have often been overshadowed in the available literature. Now in its 70th year, the NENS continues to serve as a platform to represent the needs of New England neurosurgeons, foster connections and networks with colleagues, and provide research and educational opportunities for trainees. Additionally, regional societies enable discussion of issues uniquely relevant to the region, improve referral patterns, and allow for easier attendance with geographic proximity. In this paper, the authors describe the history of the NENS and provide a roadmap for its future. The first section portrays the founders who led the first meetings and establishment of the NENS. The second section describes the early years of the NENS and profiles key leaders. The third section discusses subsequent neurosurgeons who steered the NENS and partnerships with other societies. In the fourth section, the modern era of the NENS and its current activities are highlighted.

A tribute to Karen Greenwood and her contributions to the American Medical Informatics Association.

After 25 years of service to the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), Ms Karen Greenwood, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, is leaving the organization. In this perspective, we reflect on her accomplishments and her effect on the organization and the field of informatics nationally and globally. We also express our appreciation and gratitude for Ms Greenwood's role at AMIA.

Uneven Progress in Gender Equality at Plastic Surgery Conferences: Lessons from a Decade of Meetings.

BACKGROUND: The demographics of plastic surgeons and plastic surgery trainees are changing, reflecting an increase in the diversity of medical school graduates. The authors investigated the gender diversity of speakers at several plastic surgery conferences and evaluated temporal trends over a 10-year period. METHODS: The following societies' conferences and years were included based on the conference agendas available for review: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery Research Council, American Association of Plastic Surgeons, Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, and American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery. Differences in the average amount of time spoken were analyzed using an independent one-tailed t test. RESULTS: The number of female speakers and the time allotted to speak increased for all conferences. There was not a consistent difference in the amount of time individual men and women were allotted to speak. Across the five conferences, there was no consistent relationship found between years since board certification and female participation in conference. Gender diversity among speakers at plastic surgery conferences has not kept pace with the increase in female plastic surgery trainees because those who are selected to speak are overwhelmingly men. The hypothesis that a paucity of female speakers reflects the relatively shorter duration of career experience of female plastic surgeons was not supported by these findings. CONCLUSION: It is imperative that conferences increase the participation of women and strive toward more accurately reflecting the burgeoning role that female surgeons have in the field at present and will have in the future.

Optimizing natural fertility: a committee opinion.

This committee opinion provides practitioners with suggestions for optimizing the likelihood of achieving pregnancy in couples or individuals attempting conception who have no evidence of infertility. This document replaces the document of the same name previously published in 2013 (Fertil Steril 2013;100:631-7).

Women representation in academic and leadership positions in surgery in Brazil.

We aimed to analyze the representativeness of women surgeons in academic and leadership positions in Brazil. We investigated women representativeness across surgical departments of 25 Brazilian universities (2020); across boards of 10 Brazilian surgical societies (2020), and, as speakers, in 281 surgical events (Jan-2014 to Dec-2020). From 383 individuals in university departments, 43 (11.2 %) were women (p < 0.001). Only three universities had women as department chairs. From 163 positions in surgical societies, only 14 positions (8.6 %) were held by women (p < 0.001). The underrepresentation is worse in prestigious positions (presidency and vice-presidency), in which only 1 (5 %) were women. In 281 surgical events, there were 6686 speakers, of which only 886 (13.3 %) of these were women (p < 0.001). Further studies are needed to elucidate the possible causes for the gender gap in these scenarios in Brazil, so as to implement effective strategies to improve gender representativeness in surgery in the country.

Cadaver surgical training in Japan: its past, present, and ideal future perspectives.

The framework for cadaver surgical training (CST) in Japan was established in 2012, based on the "Guidelines for Cadaver Dissection in Education and Research of Clinical Medicine" of the Japan Surgical Society (JSS) and the Japanese Association of Anatomists. Subsequently, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare allocated funding from its budget for CST. By 2019, CST was being practiced in 33 medical schools and universities. Currently, the CST Promotion Committee of the JSS reviews each CST report submitted by medical schools and universities and provides guidance based on professional autonomy. This paper outlines the history of CST in Japan and presents a plan for its future. To sustain and oversee CST implementation, an operating organization, funded by stakeholders, such as government agencies, academic societies, and private companies, is needed.

Gender trends of authors presenting at a regional vascular surgery meeting.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized a potential gender disparity within a regional society like the Southern Association of Vascular Surgery (SAVS) when compared with vascular surgery demographics in the region. To assess this, we analyzed meeting and membership participation at the SAVS compared with regional data from the Society of Vascular Surgery as well as board certification in vascular surgery published by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). METHODS: The published programs from the SAVS Annual Meeting from 2012 to 2019 were analyzed for membership, presenter gender, type, topic, discussant gender, moderator gender, postgraduate course presenter gender, and manuscript publication demographics. The ABS was petitioned and yearly Vascular Surgery diplomate (ABS-VS) gender from member states of the SAVS was examined for the same period. Fisher's exact Student's t-test and analysis of covariance were used. RESULTS: There were 257 total presentations (184 podium, 71.6%; 73 poster, 28.4%). A total of 61.4% (n = 43) of presentations by females were podium presentations, compared with 75.4% (n = 141) by males (P = .03). Females were less likely to be published when compared with their male counterparts (41.8% vs 58.7%, P = .02). The percentage of female gendered presenters statistically increased over the time period examined compared with a decrease in male presenters (R2 = 0.61, m = 1.27 vs R2 = 0.08, m = -0.35, P = .02). Female presenters had a female discussant 10.5% of the time compared with male presenters who had a male discussant 95.1% of the time (P < .0001). Females comprised 3.8% ± 1.1% of SAVS yearly membership compared with 12.0% ± 4.6% ABS-VS diplomates among SAVS member states (P < .0001). SAVS female membership significantly lagged behind the increase in ABS-VS female diplomate rate (P = .001). Only 39.1% of SAVS members were cross-listed in Society of Vascular Surgery membership rolls, with a total of 464 potential SAVS members, 11.2% or 52 of whom are female. CONCLUSIONS: We found that female presenters at the SAVS Annual Meeting were less likely to be podium presenters, interface with other female discussants, and publish manuscripts when compared with their male counterparts. Statistically, female members were underrepresented within the SAVS membership rolls when compared with known boarded female vascular surgeons among southern member states. This gender gap highlights a unique opportunity to enhance and potentially increase mentorship opportunities for female trainees who are presenting and/or attending this regional vascular surgery meeting.
